These handmade 5oz cups are a collaboration between CLO and our friend Rebecca Rowthorn who owns Lochard Clay (LoC) - Handmade Ceramics from the heart of the Trossachs.. We have known Rebecca and the family for years, and they now live near Loch Lomond, where she has her garden studio.

These small sized cups are perfect for small flat whites or a cortado, and are equally brilliant for delicious filter coffee, keeping it warm, and ready for a top up.

Each piece is carefully made by hand and is perfectly individual.

Rebecca kindly agreed to a CLO collaboration for what we hope is our first of many. Each handmade piece is unique and may slightly differ from the photographs.

This lot is sourced from smallholder farmers representing Kundwa Women Coffee, a women-only farmer group operating under Abateraninkunga Ba Sholi (Aba Sholi) Co-operative.

Sholi co-op was established in 2008 by 30 women living and growing coffee in the region as a conscious effort to invigorate the local economy. It is located in Cyeza sector, Muhanga district, central Rwanda.

“Abateraninkunga” is a Kinyarwanda word which translates to “mutual assistance”, encapsulating their values to encourage more farmers to join. Today there are 721 farmers. We met with women on the Single Mothers Project, and women and families farming in the surrounding landscape. The Cooperative is providing for the community with pre school nutrition, space for community education (which is about to include primary level education), and an extensive health centre. The co-op grow and provide coffee trees and produce fertiliser for free to locals, to encourage farming. They also support stills through agronomists on team offering training and advice.

All the coffee grows at altitudes between 1,800 and 2,000 masl. The Coop became Fair Trade certified in 2015, the same year they won the Rwanda Cup of Excellence Award. Find more on our visit, across our socials and YouTube.

Kongo Coffee Ltd. is a locally owned coffee export company based primarily in Simbu province. Simbu is Papua New Guinea’s third largest coffee producing province. Kongo have been in operation since before the turn of the millennium and provides services to the smallholder coffee producers.

Coffee in PNG is mostly processed using the traditional wet method, with drying done with mechanical driers, raised beds or ‘sails’. Sails are tarpaulins stretched out under the sun to provide clean space to dry the beans.

Over the years Kongo have been supporting several schools across the Simbu province. This includes funding for building development, resources, and school fee scholarships.

This particular coffee includes a premium for the Simbu Project This project is their own, which has been investing locally for more than 35 years. They pay producers 20% above market rate for their coffee, which means not only are producers paid well, but there is always plenty of good coffee coming through because there is up to a further 60% increase available based on quality. This in turn means they can sell at a good price, and have money to invest. 7 primary schools are funded by Kongo B, and infrastructure is invested in too such as local road upkeep and telegraph connections.
